Our Mission

HEARTLAND PET WELFARE, INC. is a not-for-profit, no-kill shelter dedicated to finding loving, fur-ever homes for cats and kittens. As space and donations allow, we accept homeless, abandoned and injured cats. We provide them with immediate veterinary care. HPW strives to create an environment which embraces and increases the awareness and support for humane treatment of all animals.

HEARTLAND was founded in 1999 by a small group of animal lovers who continue to give their time and hearts for this great cause.

HEARTLAND gives through "hands on" and financial support. We are only funded by private/business donations, grants (when available) and fundraisers.

Adoption Policy

Heartland’s goal is to place our pets in homes that will be able to meet their needs. The following is Heartland's policy:

  • An application must be completed and approved before an adoption can take place. There may be a 2-day waiting period while the application is considered.

  • Heartland Pet Welfare reserves the right to deny any application for adoption. We hope you will understand that the pet's welfare must be our primary concern.

  • There may be additional questions during this 2-day waiting period as well

  • No pet will be adopted as a “surprise” gift. The recipient must discuss the adoption with Heartland. An application must be completed for each adoption.

  • Applications must be filled out by an adult 18 years old or older.

  • After your application is approved, you will need to bring a clean carrier to take the cat home.

  • Due to the cost and attention invested in our furry friends, we’d prefer that cats adopted from HPW would be an indoor only cat.

ADOPTION FEE:
$90 per cat. This fee helps to offset the cost of spaying or neutering, the feline leukemia/FIV tests, distemper and rabies vaccinations, ear mite and flea treatments, chipping, deworming, plus any medications the cat needed while in our care at the shelter (Average cost of getting a FREE cat and having all this done is about $250).

  • All HPW cats have been spayed or neutered before adoption.

  • Pets will be adopted to homes that appear to be stable and able to care for a pet in a reasonable manner (including the ability to provide veterinary care as needed, providing a safe environment for the pet, and with the intention of a long-term commitment to the pet).

  • Many landlords do not permit pets. If renting, HPW will contact your landlord to confirm their pet policy. Inform your landlord that HPW will be contacting them for a reference.

Adopting a pet is a life-long commitment. If the situations arise that cause you to think that you may need to re-home your pet, HPW may be able to refer you to appropriate resources.

BE SURE YOU REALLY WANT A PET FOR IT’S LIFETIME BEFORE YOU ADOPT!

Care and Training

“I had been told that the training procedure with cats was difficult. It’s not. Mine had me trained in two days.”
