Our cats would love to find a new home with you! To come in and see the cats all you have to do is call or email us and we'll set up a time that works for you to get together with our volunteer at the shelter to meet the kitties.
Our adoption fees are currently $75 for one cat or kitten, or $125 for two cats or kittens. The adoption fee helps us with the cost for (including but not limited to):
Spay (or) neuter costs
Combo test for feline leukemia and feline immune virus (FeLk/FIV)
Distemper, leukemia, and rabies vaccinations
Treatment for ear mites, worms, and fleas
Medications the cat needed while in our care at the shelter
Daily care for the cat
The following is Heartland's cat adoption policies and guidelines. Please take a few minutes to read them if you are interested in adopting a cat.
Following HPW's cat adoption policies and guidelines, there is an adoption application that you can fill out online. To complete an adoption application in person, please contact us to set up an appointment at your convenience.
Heartland Pet Welfare, Inc. Adoption Policies and Guidelines
Heartland's goal is to place these pets in homes that will be able meet their needs. The following is Heartland's policy:
An application must be completed and approved before an adoption can take place. There will be at least a 2 day period while the application is considered. There may be additional questions during this 2 day period.
No pet will be adopted as a "surprise" gift. The recipient must discuss the adoption with Heartland. An application must be completed for each adoption.
No cat will be taken from these premises without a pet carrier. They are not to be carried in your arms - or in a cardboard box - nor allowed loose in your car. Pets can be lost if they are startled by traffic noises, strangers, or unfamiliar situations. A secure pet case will keep the pet safe. If you borrow a case from someone, please be sure to clean and sanitize it before using it for your new pet. You would be wise to purchase your own carrier since you will need it often in the future for vet visits, etc. You may need it in emergency situations in the future.
We prefer these pets to be adopted into indoor-only homes since many cats and dogs have developed into lost and/or injured strays when allowed to roam.. Occasionally, an animal cannot adjust to living indoors for various reasons. In that case, it will be placed into the appropriate outdoor setting.
All animals will be spayed or neutered before adoption. When each animal is spayed or neutered will be determined by it's age, the animals condition and development. This will be done at Heartland's discretion, with the animal's welfare being the most important consideration.
Pets will be adopted to homes that appear to be stable and able to care for a pet in a responsible manner (including the ability to provide veterinary care as needed, providing a safe environment for the pet, and with the intention of a long-term commitment to the pet).
Be aware that many landlords do not permit pets. If renting, get a prior approval from your landlord. Also consider the possibility that you may have to move at sometime in the future. Will you be willing and able to take the pet with you?
Very young children may not know how to handle pets. If you have a baby or toddler, it may be best to wait a few years to acquire a pet. Every situation is different, but most shelters prefer a home with older children or adults for most pets.
Please remember: A pet in not a toy - and not to be used as temporary entertainment and discarded when it becomes a "bother".
If you do not presently have children, consider the possibility that you may want to start a family in the future. Several cats have been returned to us when a new baby has arrived. It is not fair to the pet to have to leave it's home just becuase a new baby joins the family; but this often happens.
BE SURE YOU REALLY WANT A PET FOR IT'S LIFETIME BEFORE YOU ADOPT.
Heartland Pet Welfare reserves the right to deny any application for adoption. We hope you will understand that the pet's welfare must be our first concern.
Adoption Application
This application must be completed, signed (in person at a later date), and any additional questions answered to be considered for adoption. At least 2 days will be required for consideration of this application. Heartland Pet Welfare reserves the right to deny any application.
Applicants should be aware that all responsible facilities will require approved applications before adoptions can take place. This is not a reflection on any individual's character, but is simply a necessary part of the process to place these pets in permanent, safe homes. We thank you for your cooperation.
